What makes the All Out Call Out different from virtually all other races is its format. The All Out Call Out is a single elimination street car race. Racers in each class will have tickets drawn to “call out” other racers in their class. Racers cannot turn down a race when challenged. The winner of the race will be the first car across the finish line without breaking out of the ET limits of their class, not necessarily the car with the faster time.  The 2013 All Out Call Out is unique because it combines the fun and excitement of a heads up street race, with the timing equipment, organization and safety of a race track. Thanks to numerous sponsors, the winner of each class will receive over $1000.00 cash prize.

 “This event is a great venue to introduce would-be racers to competitive drag racing; it’s also an event for the most seasoned drag racers,” said Mike Taddoni, one of the event organizers. “Most of all, the All Out Call Out promotes keeping drag racing where it belongs, the race track, not the streets,” he added.

A short while later, racers crossed the finish line in downtown Clovis. The racer closest to the official time of 1:17:22 would be declared the winner!

Winner  -  Joe Wood

The racer closest to the official time was Joe Wood coming in at 1:17:58. Joe was only 36 seconds over the official time.

According to Don and Sheryl, they have just completed a 3 year long restoration of their 1949 Chevrolet Pickup.  They have restored it to original condition.  When Don and Sheryl found the pickup, it had been sitting in front of a person’s home for 20 years, being used as a yard decoration, the bed used as a flowerbed.

The pickup is a 1949 Chevrolet 5 window 3100 series.  Don and Sheryl went with an original restoration, including rebuilding the original 216 cubic inch, 6 cylinder babbitt engine.  The exterior color is an original mist green.

Once again, Congratulations to Don and Sheryl for rescuing this wonderful piece of automotive history.  This is a great addition to our area vintage and classic car collection.

The birth of the automobile

Benz Patent Motor Car, the first automobile (1885 – 1886)

The first stationary gasoline engine developed by Carl Benz was a one-cylinder two-stroke unit which ran for the first time on New Year’s Eve 1879. Benz had so much commercial success with this engine that he was able to devote more time to his dream of creating a lightweight car powered by a gasoline engine, in which the chassis and engine formed a single unit.

The major features of the two-seater vehicle, which was completed in 1885, were the compact high-speed single-cylinder four-stroke engine installed horizontally at the rear, the tubular steel frame, the differential and three wire-spoke wheels. The engine output was 0.75 hp (0.55 kW). Details included an automatic intake slide, a controlled exhaust valve, high-voltage electrical vibrator ignition with spark plug, and water/thermo siphon evaporation cooling.

On January 29, 1886, Benz applied for a patent for his “vehicle powered by a gas engine.” The patent – number 37435 – may be regarded as the birth certificate of the automobile. In July 1886 the newspapers reported on the first public outing of the three-wheeled Benz Patent Motor Car, model no. 1.
